Workshop Wild Orchids and Field Flowers

In the heart of Flemish Brabant there’s a fairy place where rare wild orchids can still be found – the common spotted orchid is present everywhere, but there is also a small chance of seeing the very rare common twayblade orchis, the fragrant orchis or the bee orchis. On top of that lots of field flowers, like the daisy, the ragged robin and the buttercup attract numerous insects. An inspiring place for the macro photographer!

Workshop details

Late afternoon we meet near the orchid fields. The exact location is only released a week before the workshop, this as a precaution to protect the rare orchids. We will have time to photograph the flowers and their visitors at length. There is only a guarantee to see the common spotted orchid, the other species are present but hard to find. We will continue to photograph until the sun dissapears behind the trees. The participants will get on the spot assistance to improve their images.

After the workshop the participants will receive extensive feedback on two photos that were made during the course of this morning.

Who is the workshop aimed at?

  • photographers who already know the basics of photography (relationship aperture, ISO and shutter speed; light metering)
  • and who are in the possession of a digital SLR camera (or a mirrorless system camera) with macro lens or equivalent ((e.g. also a 50mm lens with extension tubes is a perfect alternative for a macro lens)
  • and/or who have already followed a beginner’s workshop macro photography

Practical info:

  • no food or drinks are foreseen or available, so it might be a good idea to bring a snack and a drink.
  • a low angle will be desirable for good macro photos, so bad clothing and a piece of plastic to lie on are recommended.
  • IMPORTANT! The participants will keep both days free - if the weather is bad on day 1, the workshop will be postponed until the bad weather date.
  • as always when you’re photographing in the woods or in the field, you have to take into account that there might be ticks (and of course mosquitoes!) present. More information about ticks and how to protect yourself, you can find here:
  • no cancellation or other insurance is included in this workshop.

Possibly there will be certain security measures that have to be followed. They will be sent to you a week before the workshop so the latest version of the COVID-19 measures can be provided.
